Theatre Baton Rouge to Close its Curtains

The theater will not reopen for its 80th season due to financial challenges, which worsened after the COVID-19 pandemic.

Rising costs and the loss of sponsorships have made it impossible for the local theater to continue operating.

The theater's final show was on Sunday, March 24, featuring a production of the disco-themed, roller-skating musical Xanadu.
Many of the actors expressed their heartbreak over the closing of the theater but shared gratitude for the memories they made on stage.

Jamie Leonard-Brubaker will play her last-ever role at TBR as Calliope, a villain set to curse her sister. She considers the cast and crew family and says the theater means the world to her.

"I've been here since I was 15 years old, and it's been 25 years of absolute magic," said Leonard-Brubaker.

Don Fields, who plays Sonny Malone, opened up about how the cast is navigating this difficult transition. Although the physical space is closing, he said, the spirit of the theater community will live on.

"This theater houses a community, and this community is not going anywhere," he said. "Art is so much more than the building that it is in."

As the cast prepares to take their final bow, they are appreciating the time they have spent together on stage and looking forward to working together again. They will close down the theater hand in hand, smiling and having fun—and they won't be acting.

"We love you. Thank you, and goodnight," said Leonard-Brubaker.

Kamryn Hecker, who plays the leading lady Kiera, said, "It's not the last hoorah, it's just a farewell as of now."

This was Hecker’s first season at TBR, but she said the ending is bittersweet and feels like “such a hit” to her and the community.

Theatre Baton Rouge was known as a place for the community for nearly 80 years and served as a home for creative artists and audiences.

Its legacy, the actors say, will continue in the hearts of those it brought together.

Upcoming Volume of The Scout Guide Launching August 2025

The Scout Guide is a city-specific guidebook that focuses on promoting small businesses, with more than 90 locations nationwide. Volume nine drops this August, and Elements Design is proud to be featured for the first time.
Adeline Eurbanks, assistant editor of The Scout Guide, said, “We definitely curate, so it’s invitation-only, and it’s always an honor to be asked.”
Through careful research, "scouting" highlights popular and hidden gems around Baton Rouge. Elements Design is one of those gems, offering a wide range of styles, whether you’re into traditional or trendy looks, with options to fit every budget.
Owner Jenny Murphy created a design center to make the design process accessible and easy for her customers. “We’ve also gone into international markets so that we can look at pieces there and bring back things that they don’t have here in the U.S. or especially in Baton Rouge,” she said.
Eurbanks said Elements Design stood out because of the variety of options. "If you are looking for something, you will find it."
With Murphy’s team, you can bring your vision to life within your price range. The store features many transitional pieces, with a mix of custom designs offering different levels of luxury.
Elements Design will receive a three-page feature in the upcoming Baton Rouge volume of The Scout Guide. This is just one of the many local businesses getting the recognition they’ve worked for.
Other stores, including Neighborhood Barre, Eggie Salon Studio, and Carriages Fine Clothier, will also be featured in the guide.
